“Survivor Zero” is a sandbox style survival game set in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. Instead of focusing on combating waves of zombies in high-octane shootouts, the game will allow players the chance to use not only strength but creativity and logic in order to survive in a post-apocalyptic world.

The game is being designed by a team of independent developers after a post on the website Reddit asked for a game with “No time limits, no plot devices, no crazy “super zombie” boss.. Just a massive open world where you have to actually be careful what you do.”

It is with this goal in mind that a group of talented Redditors continue to work on creating an immersive, free-roaming zombie game. A game where everyone can experience the thrills and struggles of a post-apocalyptic world. Where food and shelter is more important than weapons.

I've been playing around with ZBrush and cinema 4D lately. I then stumbled upon a technique called 'photomapping'. My idea was to map my 2 dimensional paintings onto a 3 dimensional environment to create a feeling to 'walk' through my painting.

This is the sketch I started out with. Then I created a simple 3d environment and projected the texture from the painting on my boxes and plains. Here is the 8 sec result:

Redefined the golem class of my former concept. He is one of the playable characters of my upcoming coop boardgame 'Explore and Terminate' (XNT). Here is the animated video I did a while ago. It's only one minute long, and is supposed to be a propaganda style music video. I had a lot of fun with this, since it was my very first flash animation. Unfortunatelly it's German, so you'll probably have a hard time understanding it, since this is focussed around typography. You'll find the translation below.

Trying to improove my speedy skills again, I focused on something I'm not used to: cars. The problem is that they always need to look nice and clean and don't allow much of a rough style. Lots of paths and lots of gradients, stuff I actually don't really like. Anyway I'm still a bit proud, because I did'nt really had to go back and forth except for the tires.

I watched Ninja Assassin with some friends a couple days ago. Most of them have been disappointed, but I was truely satisfied. I mean if your looking for lots of twists and turns storywise, go watch the sixth sense. If you want barely connected parcour-action, awesome fighting scenes and cut-off limbs you are going to love it. Emotionall change of the protagonist is, what a movie makes interesting; well, you're not going to see that. For everyone who lives in Berlin this movie has some humor in it as well: a big fighting scene is set in a stasi-bunker which seems to be right underneath ths Siegessäule.
. I didn't get around the fact that Ben Miles which I only knew from coupling did a poor job on being a authentic europol(what-the-???)-agent. I always expected him to make vulgar comments about women, because that's what he always does. I did like Rain though. My good friend Peter Popken did the concepts, may be that's why the weak points of the movie didn't really bother me. Watch it and tell me what you think.

Hey folks, looks as if I'm finally back online. There are definitelly some pros about not having internet. Unfortunatelly they are greatly outraced by the cons. Especially when you consider yourself an internet-addict. E-mails kept coming in like hell, but I just couldn't go with the delete-all button. Actually kind of a pain to leave them unanswered. Postponed is not abandoned. Well, now I'm back for sure. I'll work my way up through the pile of semi-important messages and eventually I'll be up to date at some point.
I had a couple jobs in the past month, which where kind of refreshing. I was asked to get back to my own roots. As a matter of fact I chose pen and paper to be the tools the trade.
Furthermore I started a proect of my very own. It's going to be an internet comic. Two pages are done so far, and I'll show them to you some time soon.

I moved to a new apartment this week. I don't have internet just yet, so don't be mad for not responding to your emails. I try to check them as often as I can, but things are kind of messed up right now. I'm probably busy for a couple more weeks until I can start to upload stuff again. The new working area in my flat makes me draw totally different things though. The picture above for example is made to be a poster on my door. I always wanted to visit a show like this, but I never had the chance to do so. Therefore I had to make my very own poster :) I hope you dig it. It's 4000px x 7000. YEAH! I watched the new Tarantino movie a week ago. It was quite awesome, not yet my favourite movie of all time though (as I expected). I'm looking foward to release the concept art for the weapons I did. Unfortunatelly I could not spot my name in the credits, they went by just a little too fast. Anyhow, GO WATCH IT. It'll be across europe on THURSDAY 20th of august.
I've been in a cheesy art-block mood for a while now. Weird dreams and occasions happening to me for some reason. Wait I know why, because I'm in love. From now on I'm not yelling about couples in public any longer, promise.

This walktrough is about my new method of painting. Although it is the most time-consuming proccess – next to sleeping – it is the most fun way to paint and draw, because it allows you to develop the image very spontanous throughout the process.
The first step is to create shapes and lines you find interesting. Therefore you should always cover all the shapes you don’t like. I think the easiest way is to stay on one or two layers so you’re not allowed to go back and forth too much. The color palette is random, I just don’t like to paint on a grey surface, although I’m just dealing with values here. A simple gradient map layer will change that later.
Also very useful for this – the most important step – is a big variety of brushes and textures. I have a still growing 5 gigabyte library of categorized textures, so I am able to have anything what jumps into my mind. Start your library now!The second step is basically about physics. Adding depth and perspective is the goal to achieve here. Also apllying a gradient map layer helps you deciding the mood that you want to achieve. I still merge every layer down to one – forcing myself to go forward. You cannot see it, but I always keep a perspective grid on top of my painting, so I don’t mess up too much. Still – I’m not too sure at this point what we are actually looking at.So this is the painful part in my opinion. This is about the focus of the image and where you want the viewer to look at. A lot of descisions are to be made, so having a few good refs around helps alot. Also: I opened a new document starting to draw all kinds of 2D billboards I can copy paste into the painting. It adds alot of detail and can be repeated several times.
This is where the story is told. Dramatic lights, effects space ships, blur/grain effects – accentuate the feeling you have achieved in previous steps. The theme for me was to have a pic to look at, trying to make the viewer look as long as possible. Information overflow...

Furthermore I'm working on a set of street-art stickers, although the technique is yet to find. My friend Paul a.k.a. Waakabund is selling a really nice bunch right now, which keeps inspiring me. I'm still doing a lot of digital painting, but none of them really make me wanna post them.
It's a pain when you freehand-draw font and then someone points out that you misspelled the word you just finished. But the little girl above was saying merci. doh! Thanks for pointing petja, I can still hear you laughing. Cheers

Wow. Back from the Ostsee I have to admit that this 3day party was more then awesome. Although the 'clubscene' in Stralsund isn't really too satisfying for the usual observing eye, it does have some potential. I found myself dancing to 'the greatest time of my liiiife' together with the scariest croud; ever. Big up to all the Oozing Goo members who shared this great experience with me. Thanks to Sagat who gave me 'Wolfmother' <--awesome. Didn't get too much done really, but the combination of familyparty and clubbing really got me going.
Things are going very well. I have a couple new job opportunities, my little animation film is going to be broadcasted some time soon and the Tarantino movie is coming to town which still makes me proud. Besides, today I was tought how to screenprint and on next thursday I'm going to print my first shirts. I'm not really sure, if the little shalom-guy (above) is making it onto one of them. I'm probably going for 'Das Einfache das Schwer zu machen ist'-Shirts; they look good and they promote my animation film. I always like to kill two birds with one stone.
If anyone is interested, I added some more figure studies right here.

Just came home from my birthday party... man that was a success! I had kind of an experiment going on and it it worked out pretty awesome. Seems as if I'm pretty much done with my first flash-animated short film. I was about to upload it on vimeo when my producer told me not to. They are really trying to get it on 35mm, even though/because it is just 1,5 minutes. I have to sit out on the next events and see what happens with the copyright of the song I used. I am very proud of it. I'll keep you guys up to date. I did a lot of sketching lately, making further improovement in creating volume. It seems as if I'm learning faster nowerdays, not really sure, why though. Maybe it's because I do talk alot about the different techniques and stuff. The last couple conversations tended to be rather frustrating, though. People just keep making hints about interesting things and then don't want to talk about it!? What's wrong with you? Remembering the old days, I was doing this myself; on a very proffessional level. Now since I am the victim of 'letstalkabotusomethingelse'-discussions it feels sooo anoying and I have no patients tickling the infos out of people. Almost like when I switched from bike to car; those stupid mom-on-bikes truley made me go insane... Am I an opportunist?

Bad weather in Berlin ... finally. My friends stopped giving me the evil-eye for staying in front of the screen. I lost my sketchbook yesterday, but that can't get me down.(If the one who found it reads this: pleeeaaase give it back *cry* The sketch above is in there) Anyway, couldn't get anything done really. You all probably know thiss feeling: you wait for a specific occasion to happen, but when it's finally there you just don't get the hang of it. The animation film is coming along much slower than I thought, but it's still rolling.

Had a lot of fun working on that piece. I got a little lost at rendering the blood. I thought of it in a much funnier way during the making. In the end I realised that it is one of the most brutal pieces I ever did. Just don't ask why I did it. Oh and I really hate to repeat myself.

Here is a page from my character sketchbook. I was seeing it in red and gray all the time so I decided to color it digitally instead of relaxing in the sun. Summer has arrived in Berlin and starts annoying me already. One round of footbag makes me sweat and I spend all my money on drinks instead of cigarettes. I had to babysit my little brother and we were painting eggs. Did't do that for a couple years, not sure why. It was quite fun actually. Lucha Libre for life! I really should work more often with traditional brushes instead of digital ones. I always wonder; do musicians have that same kind of problem? There are so many similarities between visual and acoustic art, but is that one of them? Anyway, it sucks for sure that you don't have ctrl+z in real life!

This is an illustration for my first flash animated movie. It appears to be much more work than I thought, since it was supposed to be only a 40 sec short movie. But building a natural acoustic atmosphere is a very hard job indeed. I've been on and off it for a couple days now, and I'm not exactly sure when it's going to be done. Right now I'm designing some background posters for the German production 'G-man Jerry Cotton' which is being produced in Babelsberg, so there is not enough time to keep on working on my own projects. I'll keep you guys up to date, though.

I finally got my hands on Photoshop CS4. It is most awesome and absolutely different from previous versions. I tried to explain the differences to my cousin who is a chef and his eyes started glowing when I said it was like working in a new kitchen. If you have a powerful graphics card PS will use that to give you some features like 360° rotation and 3 dimensional painting. Together with the 6d Art pen it is a pleasure to work. It has so many other advantages, I just can't list them. The good weather is a real pain, I would love to have some more weeks with rain and snow, so I can stick to my drawings. It's like the 'bittersweet-moment'. Bitter beacuse all of my friends are happy and outside playing footbag, and bitter because when I'm with them I can only think about what I want to draw back home... Just like bittersweet chocolate. I hate it, I mean, what's the point? Why not only sweet?

A concept I made up when I was about six years old. Back then I tried to convince my mom to get me a toygun. To emphazise my point of view I told her the gun would 'morph' into a lovegun, and everyone I aim at is getting kisses and hugs by everyone. After that and probably about a million 'pleeease's I succeded. Thanks mom.
